In Commandos 2, the big leap forward is into the third dimension. All while staying well out of sight of the enemy, naturally. Each member of the team has their own arsenal of weapons and special skills - the grunt, the sniper, the driver, the sapper, the diver, the spy - and you can control them independently or in concert to achieve your mission objectives. The game has the scale of an action-adventure, but it demands plenty of forward thinking and the methodical control of a strategy game. Stealth, strategy, and teamwork are the colors of the day. Set in an isometric world reminiscent of the old Bullfrog action-sim Syndicate, it lets you control six elite WWII troopers on all kinds of missions behind enemy lines.

The Commandos series is a blend of action and small-scale realtime strategy, with a heavy seasoning of stealth elements that should bring Metal Gear Solid to mind. The original Commandos, if memory serves, never came to a console, so a little background information should be in order for gamers who missed it. If Commandos 2 gives you as fine a grasp on your team of soldiers through the Dual Shock 2 as it does through a mouse and keyboard, it should be an excellent choice for those with more cerebral tastes in console games this fall.

Pyro's action/strategy/stealth hybrid in fact looks remarkably good on PS2, even in the early form we saw, and while control remains a question mark, it looks like there's some smart thinking going into the adaptation of the game's interface. Then they plugged in the console, and we had to eat a little bit of crow.

Most of the presentation was occupied by the frightfully beautiful PC version, displaying the game's massively detailed battlefields at 1024 x 768 resolution, and the more we saw that, the greater the expectation grew in our minds as far as how badly we were going to be let down when the people from Pyro Studios hooked up the PS2 port. Previous Information We weren't expecting a great deal when we went to see the PlayStation 2 version of Commandos 2 a while back. We'll still have to get deeper into the game when we get a copy of it in the office and can sit down and spend some quality hours with it. It's bountiful with strategies and options. The point, really, is that Commandos is rife with non-linear gameplay. Once he frees his comrade, players can select the new character if he wants (or stay as the thief), and can then get out of building through a variety of other doors, windows, or other ways. He can climb up the sides of the house, or, for instance, climb along telephone wires high across the street to the second story window and enter that way. For instance, a player can pick the thief and sneak around with him, until he frees an associate held up in a hideaway. Players can attack this game from so many angles that the designers are still finding out from their internal testers ways of beating levels they hadn't imagined. The highly detailed graphics are clearly prerendered - the detail is so small and fine, it's amazing - but many of the structures can be climbed on, contacted, and walked into, to such a degree, that it makes these kind of unique.ДЄs far as the gameplay goes, the game's best qualities are seen in its selection of choices. The game has en excellent visual sense, thanks to its interesting mixture of real polygonal structures, and totally prerendered textures.

With nine different characters from which to choose, from sappers, thieves, snipers, and other military types, including my favorite, Whisky the dog, Players will jump all over Europe from Paris, France (a level which has an excellent re-creation of the Eiffel Tower), to Denmark, Indo China, India, Normandy, for a total of 10 different environments. But if you're into strategy games, then you have patience, and so you're used to the slow pace of things.Д¬ommandos 2 looks to lavish realtime strategy fans with the kind of thing that most gamers love, choice, freedom, and lots of minute strategies. Eidos says the game will hit shelves in March, and while we're not ones to argue, we have seen this one slip at least twice, so we reckon, despite its near final look, that it's best to wait and see. The version we saw the other day has almost every it needs visually, and according to the guys at Pyro the game is still in need of gameplay tweaks, polishing, and tuning. Pyro Studios' PS2 version is looking quite good, we can honestly say. You have to like realtime strategy games, of course, and it probably helps to have a strong fancy for all things military, but Commandos 2 looks to brings gamers oodles of hours of gameplay, replay value, and naturally, lots of strategy. First Impressions Commandos 2 has taken a long time to get from its early stages to these later ones, and from what we can see of the latest version, it's all been quite worth it.
